Cap and Fade
By JAMES HANSEN
Published: December 6, 2009
AT the international climate talks in Copenhagen, President Obama is expected to announce that the United States wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to about 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 and 83 percent by 2050. But at the heart of his plan is cap and trade, a market-based approach that has been widely praised but does little to slow global warming or reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. It me…

It's well-known that the United States and China are the two biggest greenhouse-gas polluters in the world. But relatively few people can name number three on that list. It's Indonesia, thanks to heavy deforestation:
It is that frenzied rate of deforestation that has propelled Indonesia, home to 237 million people, into its top-three spot in the global league table of climate change villains. According to a government report released last month, the destruction of forests and carbon-rich peatla…

Selling Offsets By Mobile Phone in Ethiopia
By Jeffrey Marlow
PhotoVeli Pohjonen Small farmers near Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, are testing a carbon offset market facilitated by mobile phones.
One of the most daunting hurdles for the trade in carbon offsets is the logistical challenge of connecting customers — typically carbon dioxide emitting companies based in America or Europe — w…

To heck with carbon dioxide. A new study performed by the London School of Economics suggests that, to fight climate change, governments should focus on another pollutant: us.
As in babies. New people.
Every new life, the report says, is a guarantee of new greenhouse gases, spewed out over decades of driving and electricity use. Seen in that light, we might be our own worst emissions.
The activist group that sponsored the report says birth control could be one of the world's best tools for fi…

Australia has overtaken the USA and is now classified most at risk of 185 countries, according to the CO2 Energy Emissions Index (CEEI), released by UK-based global risks analyst Maplecroft.
The CEEI, one of the four main components of Maplecroft’s Climate Change Risk Report 2009/10, measures per capita CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and ranks Australia, USA, Canada, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia as the top five offenders.
Australians now emit 20.58 tons of CO2 per person annually, whereas…

In English precision in language matters. Why do we have three words ships, trucks and planes to describe the same thing? Aren’t they all just large modes of transportation. Why do we feel the need to distinguish between a mode of transportation on water, land or air? Language is a tool that is used to communicate. English is one of the languages with the most words which allows it a level of precision not available in all other languages.
So in the current environmental discussions should we b…

A policy brief by the name of "
Broadening Wind Energy Ownership by Changing Federal Incentives" by John Farrel of the New Rules project clearly explains current issues with the Production Tax Credit (PTC) as well as the onerous SEC filing requirements. These two rules alone mean that only large corporations and organizations can easily take advantage of the benefits of small wind energy farms. A shame to say the least.
We have alre…

The world could eliminate fossil fuel use by 2090 by spending trillions of dollars on a renewable energy revolution, the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) and environmental group Greenpeace said on Monday.
The 210-page study is one of few reports -- even by lobby groups -- to look in detail at how energy use would have to be overhauled to meet the toughest scenarios for curbing greenhouse gases outlined by the U.N. Climate Panel.
"Renewable energy could provide all global energy needs b…

The American Wind Energy Association announced that in the third quarter the U.S. wind energy industry installed 1,389 megawatts (MW) this quarter, bringing to 4,204 MW the total of wind power projects completed in what is expected to be another record year.
With even more reported under construction, the industry is on track to surpass the banner year of 2007, when 5,249 MW were installed, with a total of about 7,500 MW this year (7,500 MW would generate enough electricity to power the equival…

The US is learning the hard lesson that not being willing to lead or follow means being pushed out of the way. Not being willing to sign on to the Kyoto Agreement, POPS Treaty (Stockholm Convention on Persistant Organic Pollutants) or track and control genetically modified organisms (GNO); means that US and other multi-national manufacturers that have been so effective fighting these international movements in the US, find themselves having to conform to them when selling into signatory countrie…

You know things are changing when there are seminars offered which specifically explain the intense pressure placed on federal officials to incorporate “green policy” into their procurement processes. Buying “green” touches virtually all product procurements in the federal government these days. If you are a product manufacturer, manufacturer’s representative, dealer, distributor, or reseller, you need to know what it takes to be “green” and how to win profitable government business as a result.…

Indulgences are an ancient form of church-granted amnesty from certain forms of punishment, in this life or hereafter, for sin. The selling of indulgences, a practice that became generally accepted with the first Crusade and grew considerably during the later Middle Ages, allowed the popes and professional pardoners to sell the forgiveness of sins and during that time actually fund some of the Crusades. In Catholic theology, buyers of such indulgences eliminated or reduced the time necessary for…

What is the price of oil today? Hard to keep track, every day a new high is set. Just in January of 2008 a short five months ago it was almost inconceivable to pay $100 bbl and yet we are already at $140 bbl with no end in sight. Forget whether or not this price is manipulated, a function of supply, a function of demand, a function of the dollar low. The bottom lines is that for most people the price increases are simply not economically sustainable. In addition by now most people want a differe…
